Join the 2019 Youth Council

The Snowy Monaro Regional Youth Council is seeking energetic and motivated young people (12-24 years) to join the 2019 Youth Council.

What is a Youth Council?
The Youth Council advocates for the needs of young people and provides a mechanism for their participation and involvement in decision making on important community issues. The Youth Council acts in an advisory and consultative capacity to Council and Council staff on projects and any other matter that affects young people. Youth Councillors are community leaders and role models, striving to highlight the valuable contribution and achievements of young people in the Snowy Monaro.

What is the Youth Council responsible for?

  • Advocating, providing advice and making recommendations to Council on matters affecting young people
  • Coordinating, planning and implementing community activities and events, including National Youth Week
  • Identifying and initiating opportunities for participating and involvement of young people in community activities
  • Promoting community awareness of issues that impact on young people
  • Promote positive images of young people, their achievements and contributions to our community.
The Commitment: The Youth Council meets in Cooma every 6 weeks (8 times per year). Youth Councillors are expected to attend the majority of the meetings. Free transport is available. Youth Councillors will also have the opportunity to be part of ‘working groups’ for Youth Council projects and should have regular access to a phone/email in order to be able to communicate with the team. The first meeting for the 2019 Youth Council will be held in November 2018.

The Perks: The Youth Council is an opportunity for you to develop new skills, meet new people and create change in our community. Do you have ideas to make this region better? This is your chance to make it happen! Young people receive ongoing mentoring and support from Council staff and elected Councillors and also have the opportunity to participate in leadership training and conferences throughout the year.
