Plans are underway for the celebration of Land Rover’s 70th anniversary to be held in Cooma next Easter.
To mark the occasion, it’s expected 1000 Land Rovers will converge on the region with a bumper four-day program planned from Friday, March 30 to Monday, April 2.
Following the success of the 60th anniversary, the event is being welcomed back by Snowy Monaro Regional Council and the Cooma Car Club. With Land Rover’s close ties to the Snowy Mountains Scheme, one of the world’s greatest engineering feats, it’s fitting the event should return to Cooma.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council Tourism Manager, Donna Smith, said the event will provide a significant injection into the regional economy.
“An event of this size is worth over one million dollars for our region, over the four-day period,” Ms Smith said.
“Whilst it’ll be a mammoth task to organise, our local committee is coming off the back of several successful, big events like Back to Cooma and the State Weeds Conference. We are confident we can make this one a huge success too.”
Land Rover Australia has already signed up as a key sponsor, and like past events, they will have all their latest models on display.
An exciting program of events is being planned by the Cooma organising committee, the Land Rover Owners’ Club of Victoria, The Land Rover Owners’ Club of Sydney, the Range Rover Club NSW and the Land Rover Club ACT.
The 60th anniversary in 2008 attracted more than 750 Land Rovers and nearly 1,400 enthusiasts. The organisers of the 70th are hoping to attract 1000 Land Rovers. Any owner, of any type of Land Rover or Range Rover, in its original condition or fully restored, is encouraged to attend. But you only need to be a Land Rover lover – you don’t have to own one to enjoy the weekend.
A full event website will be launched in the coming weeks with further information and online booking facilities.
Activities at the 70th anniversary will include:
• Displays by trade exhibitors.
• Trips in and around the Cooma and Snowy Mountains district.
• A motorkhana.
• Terrapod test tracks, supplied by Land Rover Australia.
• The Grand Parade of Land Rovers though the main streets of Cooma.
• A swap meet.
• Demonstrations of recovery techniques.
• A gala dinner with award presentations and guest speakers.
To be involved in this exciting event, a community meeting will be held on Thursday, August 10 at 6pm at the Alpine Hotel. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP
