Nominations called for Australia Day Awards

From the friendly faces running the barbecue at a community event, to those proudly holding their coins buckets aloft, the Snowy Monaro is home to many dedicated volunteers.

Their tireless efforts ensure our towns and villages continue being the vibrant communities they are.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Australia Day Awards will recognise the outstanding contribution individuals and groups make to our community. Nominations opened on Monday, October 9 for the 2018 Australia Day Awards with Snowy Monaro’s Citizen of Year named at the official ceremony in Cooma.

Cooma’s Centennial Park will host Council’s official Australia Day Awards ceremony on Friday, January 26, 2018. Snowy Monaro Regional Council administers the Australia Day Awards on behalf of the National Australia Day Council of NSW.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor, John Rooney, is encouraging locals to nominate a worthy individual or community group for an Australia Day Award.

“The Australia Day Awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the hard work and lasting contribution volunteers make across the Snowy Monaro,” Mayor Rooney said.

“I look forward to seeing many names put forward for these awards. Often volunteers don’t get the recognition they deserve. The Australia Day Awards are a great way to provide this recognition.”

While official proceedings will be held in Cooma, community groups wishing to host their own Australia Day celebrations may request Council’s support in hosting these events.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s list of Australia Day Awards include:
• Citizen of the Year (19 years and older)
• Young Citizen of the Year (18 years and younger)
• Sportsperson of the Year
• Young Sportsperson of the Year (18 years and younger)
• Special Achievement of the Year
• Community Event of the Year
• Community Group of the Year
• Arts Person of the Year
• Entrepreneur of the Year
• Emergency Services Worker of the Year

Nominations are due by the close of business on Friday 8 December 2017. Nomination forms can be found by following the below link or from any of Council’s offices.
