Council encourages safer disposals of sharps

Council is calling on the community to ensure they safely dispose of sharps (needles, lancets or syringes).

The incorrect disposal of sharps can pose a health and safety risk to people within the community or staff engaged in waste collection services. It’s important to remember that sharps should be disposed in the correct manner.

Sharps must never be placed into any street litter, kerbside recycling, garbage or food and garden (FOGO) bins. Recycling and garden waste are normally sorted by hand (and sometimes garbage is sorted this way too), and any sharps would pose an unacceptable risk for sorting staff.

Medical sharps containers can be safely disposed of at the sites nominated below within the Snowy Monaro region. Alternatively you can visit www.safesharps.org.au, which gives a comprehensive list of all stores or locations in NSW where sharps can be disposed of safely.

Safely dispose of sharps:
Cooma Hospital and Health Service: 2A Bent Street, Cooma.
Jindabyne Health One building – downstairs carpark: Thredbo Terrace, Jindabyne.
Bombala Hospital: Wellington Street, Bombala.
Delegate MultiPurpose Service: 15 Craigie Street, Delegate.
