Public safety put first with Elm tree removal

At its Ordinary Council Meeting on Thursday 5 April 2018, Snowy Monaro Regional Council resolved to remove an Elm tree in Cooma’s Centennial Park.

Following recommendations from an independent arborist, Council decided the tree (located on the corner of Sharp and Bombala Streets) would be removed to ensure the public’s safety.

The tree is scheduled for removal during the week starting Monday 15 October 2018. Construction fencing is in place under the canopy to restrict access to the tree.

Over the past few years, Council has been monitoring a major split in the tree’s trunk. Concern was raised earlier this year after changes were recorded and a large branch fell from the canopy.

To ensure Council was presented with an independent report, an assessment was carried out by Arbor Management Australia.

While Council recognises that trees are a major asset to the character of our towns and villages, Council is focused on ensuring the public’s safety.
