Nominations are now open for the 2018 Celebrate Ability Awards. The awards are a key feature of International Day of People with Disability celebrations in the region.
International Day of People with Disability is celebrated on, or around, Monday, December 3. The day aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s Community Development Officer, Kristy Harvey, is calling for people to help celebrate the day.
“We are looking to the community to get the word out about International Day of People with Disability, in particular nominations for the Celebrate Ability Awards,” Kristy said.
The Celebrate Ability Awards are presented each year to people with disability, businesses and community groups who are leaders in accessibility and inclusion.
Categories include Employer of the Year (The Fletcher Lee Shield), Employee of the Year, Volunteer / Voluntary Activity of the Year, Community Event / Activity, Community Participant of the Year and Community Champion.
Previous recipients of The Fletcher Lee Shield include Snowy Vets, Gordon Litchfield Wool and The Lott Café.
“We encourage the community to join us in recognising these businesses for their leadership in the employment of people with disability.
“We’re excited to see which businesses are nominated this year, and who will get to display the shield in their workplace throughout 2019,” Kristy said.
Nominations for the 2018 Celebrate Ability Awards close on Friday 16 November. The community, including nominees, are invited to attend the awards ceremony to be held at the Celebrate Ability Festival in early December.
International Day of People with Disability celebrations in the Snowy Monaro region are coordinated by an organising committee, with representation from: Australian Unity Home Care, Cooma Challenge, NSW Department of Education, Monaro Early Intervention Service, Monaro Family Support Service, Settlement Services International Ability Links, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, The Disability Trust and Uniting NDIS.
