Magpies

Magpies are a protected species and it is against the law to kill them.

If removal of a magpie is required contact National Parks and Wildlife to arrange relocation.

 

General Information:

• The male magpie swoops to protect the female and the chicks. If a male is removed from the nest, another male will move in and start the breeding process again, which extends the length of time that the swooping will occur.
• Swooping generally lasts for less than eight weeks a year while magpies are nesting and protecting their young. This occurs in Spring. This generally concludes when the chicks leave the nest. Only some of the birds will see people as a threat. Many will not swoop.

 

Precautions which can be taken:

• Avoid the magpie territory if possible.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella if walking through their territory
• Do not provoke or harass the bird.
