We offer and supports a variety of waste education events and campaigns, with the main goal to inform and educate the community in reducing waste going to landfill and living more sustainable.
Our Resource and Waste Education team offer a range of activities and learning strategies to improve awareness and engagement on local sustainability issues and waste diversion.
Learning about waste diversion from any age helps reinforce sustainable behaviours and the younger generation in particular can take home the information and get their whole household involved.
If you are a business, community group or school that would like to host an information session based on recycling, home composting, worm farming, waste diversion/ waste avoidance, please contact Council’s Education team to arrange an education presentation.
Topics and programs
- Beyond the Bin – focus on recycling beyond the 3 bin collection system. For example education on Community Recycling Centres and Ewaste
- Composting and Worm Farming – focus on sustainable living in the home
- Recycle Right – focus on the 6 simple steps to Recycle Right
- 5Rs of Zero Waste – focus on Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot and how we can follow the 5Rs in everyday living.

Litter Prevention Grant
Snowy Monaro Regional Council has been successful in a $75,000 NSW EPA funded litter prevention grant under the Waste Less Recycle More initiative.
The Litter Prevention Grants Program supports litter targets in the next phase of the NSW Government’s Waste and Sustainable Materials Strategy 2041, which includes targets to reduce plastic litter by 30 per cent by 2025, and 60 per cent of all litter items by 2030.
The funds allow Council to implement some recommendations from the Sustainable Snowies Action Plan to tackle litter in hotspots highlighted by the community and identified in the Sustainable Snowies Strategy, such as Jindabyne’s Claypits carpark, high traffic lake foreshore areas, Banjo Paterson Park and Pooh Bay. This is especially a growing issue in the busy winter months and peak holiday periods as lake foreshore usage continues to expand across all seasons.

The project will use litter prevention activities, such as upgrading infrastructure, leading community clean-ups, educational campaigns and regulatory activities, over a ten-month period.
Through a collaborative approach the project aims to reduce litter by creating community ownership and engaging local waste ambassadors. Upgrading of bin stations and signage, and trialing new bin systems form part of this prevention program to reach litter reduction targets.
According to the EPA, the Waste Less Recycle More initiative has reduced litter across NSW by 43 percent since 2013. The estimated cost of litter services nationally is approximately $300M to $350M annually.
