Everyone’s invited to come and celebrate International Day of People with Disability on Friday 2 December 2022 from 2pm – 5pm in Cooma, with the Celebrate Ability Festival at Cooma Showground’s Multifunction Centre.

International Day of People with Disability is a day to break down disability barriers and celebrate abilities, marked around the world with celebrations on or around 3 December each year.

Now in its thirteenth year, the Celebrate Ability Festival has become a highlight event for people with disability, their families, carers, and service providers.

The 2022 Celebrate Ability Festival will include displays from local service providers, community groups, and sporting clubs – along with live music, food, health and wellbeing activities, a magician, and a kid’s zone.

This free event is suitable for all ages and we encourage everyone to come along and join in the fun.

“Those of us who have been involved in the past know what a great event the Festival is. It highlights the diversity of our community, and empowers people with disability to connect with each other and share their achievements and aspirations with the community,” said Kristy Harvey, Community Development Officer at Snowy Monaro Regional Council.

“We want everyone to hear about the great things that are happening out there every day, and what we could all be doing a little bit better to help build a more inclusive community.”

The organising committee, comprised of community organisations including Cooma Challenge, The Disability Trust, Monaro Family Support Service, and Uniting are still welcoming inquiries from potential entertainers and stallholders.

A number of community organisations, including Cooma Multicultural Centre, Wellways, The Salvation Army, Mission Australia, and Disabled Wintersports Australia will be on board to support this important day.

The Celebrate Ability Festival is supported by funding from the NSW Government’s Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events Program.

The United Nations theme for IDPwD 2022 is ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’.
