Councillors voted to support a Mayoral Minute tabled by Mayor Narelle Davis at the November Ordinary Council Meeting in Jindabyne last week, formalising Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s support of a formal declaration of a statewide road emergency.

The Office of Local Government NSW made this declaration on Thursday 3 November 2022, and were soon joined by the Country Mayors Association in calling on the NSW and Australian Governments to increase their funding and support for road maintenance and repair.

In the last 12 months, 126 of the 128 local government areas in New South Wales have received a natural disaster declaration. There has been an estimated $2.5 billion in damage to roads in NSW due to relentless rains and flooding.

“Our road network, and the road network of shires across the state, has disastrous damage,” wrote Mayor Davis in the Mayoral Minute.

“We are facing a task that is beyond the reasonable scope of any local government authority. We face an unprecedented disaster that requires an unprecedented response.”

Council resolved to join the declaration and write to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Premier Dominic Perrotet, Member for Eden-Monaro and Minister for Regional Development, Local Government and Territories Kristy McBain, and Member for Monaro Nichole Overall.
