Snowy Monaro Regional Council is excited to announce that the official opening of the new Jindabyne Library is now scheduled for 12 noon Monday 22 August 2022.

In attendance at the official launch will be the Minister for Tourism, Aboriginal Affairs, the Arts and Regional Youth, Ben Franklin; Member for Monaro Nichole Overall; Snowy Monaro Regional Council representatives and Councillors, and Ngarigo Elders.

Prior to the official opening, the new Jindabyne Library will be open for a Community Preview Session between 9am – 1pm on Saturday 13 August 2022. All welcome.

The new library will then open for full operation, five days per week from 11am Tuesday 23 August, following the official opening on Monday 22 August 2022. Hours will be:

  • Tuesday 11am – 3pm
  • Wednesday to Friday 1 – 5pm
  • Saturday 9am – 1pm

Jindabyne was the largest regional town in NSW without a library facility, beyond the travelling mobile library, so this is a great step for the region and there are many in the community who have campaigned hard for this over the years.

This new facility is a major asset for Jindabyne and the surrounding region. It was made possible with the financial support of the NSW Government through Create NSW’s Regional Cultural Fund and the 2021/22 Public Library Infrastructure Grant Program. Council extends its sincere appreciation to the NSW Government for making this project a reality.

Council would also like to thank fjmstudio and Built for their design and execution of this project in a very tight timeframe. Thanks to their work, Jindabyne Library is not only a community asset, but a beautiful addition to the built environment.

The modular library will remain on site for at least five years. After this time, it may be moved and repurposed dependent on the newly designed civic area for Jindabyne under the Snowy Mountains Special Activation Precinct (SAP).

Jindabyne Library was named following a competition, with community members submitting options and the community choosing their preferred name from those submitted. Council is grateful to our community for their support.

Ngarigo Elders will be consulted on naming internal sections of the new library.

We encourage everyone across our region to visit the new library. Head to https://www.snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au/Library or our Facebook pages (Council and Library) for updates on upcoming events and developments.
