How do I join the library?

Library membership is free, there are no joining fees and you do not have to be a resident in the region to join.  Reciprocal arrangements are in place with other regional libraries and temporary membership is available for long term visitors & seasonal workers.

To become a member simply visit your nearest branch or complete the online Membership Application Form:

  • Adults are required to produce identification, which shows proof of current address, e.g. a driver's licence, rates notice or utility account

  • For those under 16 yrs a parent or guardian will need to sign an application form

  • Identification and proof of address of parent/guardian is required

  • You will be able to borrow immediately, providing you have produced the required identification when joining

What can I borrow?

Members may borrow up to 15 items per membership card.

How do I check what I have on loan or on reserve?

You can phone your branch library and ask staff to check for you.  If you have internet access you can also check your membership record online using your membership number and library PIN.  If you can't remember your PIN you will need to contact the library.

An item I want is on loan to someone else. Can I reserve it?

Yes. Reservations may be placed in person, by phone or online. You will be notified by mail or email advising that the item is ready to be collected from the branch of your choice.

Can I return items I borrow to another library?

Yes.  Any item you have borrowed from any branch or Mobile Library stop may be returned at any location.

Can I renew my books?

You can renew your books either in person, over the phone on (02) 6451 1630 or in the My Details of our website. Items can be renewed twice unless the item has been reserved by another patron.  However, if overdue they cannot be renewed online.

What if the library doesn't have an item?

Talk to the staff at your local branch and they will be able to explore the options available. We may borrow it on your behalf from another Library (charges may apply), consider buying the item for the collection or be able to suggest another source of information. To request an item for purchase, fill in our Request for Purchase form which is located on the left hand menu.

I lost an item, what can I do?

Firstly, talk to the staff at your local branch, they will be able to advise you of the best course of action. A replacement cost plus an administration fee is payable for any lost or damaged items (as per the current SMRC Fees and Charges).

Can I return items out of hours?

Libraries at Bombala, Cooma and Jindabyne have an after hours returns chute.

How long can I borrow for?

All items have a four (4) week loan period. If you would like to have an item for longer than four weeks, then it can be extended to your required date. This service is only offered if the item is not required by another borrower.

What happens if I lose my card?

Please report your lost card to a library employee. A small fee is charged for a replacement card.

Should I let the library know if I change my address?

Yes, it is a condition of membership that you notify the library if you change your name or address. You can do this in person at one of our branches or by sending an email.

How do I find out what's on at the library?

Events are advertised up to four weeks before an event in all the Libraries.  Events are also advertised on our website in the Events Calendar and on our Facebook page.

Are word processing and photocopying facilities available?

Yes. You can access these facilities at all branches. Word processing is available to access on all public computers.  Black & white and colour photocopies are available for both A4 & A3 sizes. Charges are set by Council as per the current SMRC Fees and Charges.

Can I access the internet and Wi-Fi?

Free access to the Internet & Wi-Fi is available at all branches including the Mobile Library.

Donations?

Donations to the Library benefit the community, so when you are clearing out your bookshelves think of us.

However, the Library reserves the right to determine if donated material will be included in the collections. Donated materials that are not included are sold with the money going towards the purchase of new materials. Donations can be new or used material, but once accepted donations become the property of SMRL.

Does the library have meeting rooms for hire?

Meeting rooms are available for community use at either the Cooma or Jindabyne Libraries. Hire charges are set by Council (as per the current SMRC Fees and Charges).  Hirers must adhere to the Library's Meeting Room Policy.
