Rates and Water Billing

1. Land Rates

Rates are levied for the period 1 July to 30 June and are payable on the following dates:

  • 1st Instalment                  
Due 31 August
  • 2nd Instalment
Due 30 November
  • 3rd Instalment
Due 28 February
  • 4th Instalment
Due 31 May
 

 

 

 

 

 

Interest is charged on a daily basis as per the maximum as set by the NSW Government and is applied to installments respectively if unpaid by the due dates.

 

2. Water Billing 

There are three water billing periods:

  • Period 1
1 July to 31 October
  • Period 2
1 November to 28 February
  • Period 3              
1 March to 30 June

 

Water meters are read once each water billing period and notices for Usage and Access Charges are generated and forwarded after the end of each period.

 

3. How to pay your rates and water bills

  • Phone: Call Council on 1300 345 345 and select option 2 to pay with your credit card. Alternatively call 1300 720 938 and follow the prompts (MasterCard or Visa only).
  • BPAY: The information is on your rates notice and payment can be made through your financial institution. 
  • Mail: Post your cheque or money order with your payment slip from your rates notice to:
    Snowy Monaro Regional Council, PO Box 714,  Cooma NSW 2630. 
    Please make the cheque payable to Snowy Monaro Regional Council.
  • In Person: At any Council office by cheque or EFTPOS (MasterCard, Visa or debit card). Council does accept cash but prefers contactless non-cash payments where possible. The Delegate Rural Transaction Centre (RTC) can process rates, water and debtor account payment. However, they except cash or cheque only.
  • Centrepay: Contact Centrelink for payment details.

4. Pension rebate

All NSW councils give a mandatory rebate to eligible pensioners of up to $250 off ordinary rates, $87.50 off water charges and $87.50 off sewer charges.

You are an eligible pensioner if you are liable to pay the rates and charges on a property, which is your sole or principal residence, and you have a current pensioner concession card issued by Centrelink, or you have a current pensioner concession card issued by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

To apply for a Pensioner Rebate, please download the Pensioner Concession Application Form(PDF, 736KB). Please complete and return this form(PDF, 736KB) and email to council@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au with a copy of your Pension Card.  

Once Council receives your application, Centrelink will be contacted to confirm your eligibility to receive a rebate on your rates.

7. Responsibility of purchasers

 

Snowy Monaro Regional Council (SMRC) advises purchasers of land or property in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council local government area, be it for residential purpose or otherwise, that Legal and Practical Access to the purchased land is the responsibility of the purchaser.
