A beautiful new mural is set to put the finishing touches on the recently upgraded Jindabyne Skate Park, with local artist Mike Shankster on-track to complete the artwork by Monday 15 July 2024, weather permitting.

The mural depicts iconic plants and animals native and local to Jindabyne, complementing the family-friendly design of the new skate park. This public artwork will help further connect the new facility to its location and our community, enhancing the visual appeal of what it already one the Snowy Monaro’s most scenic locations.

Snowy Monaro Regional Council Mayor Chris Hanna said the mural represents the final stage in transforming this important part of the Lake Jindabyne foreshore into a true hub for the community.

‘The upgraded skate park has already become a popular gathering place for families and community members of all ages. Mike’s new mural is the finishing touch that will really make sure that the people of Jindabyne can enjoy coming together in a beautiful setting for the long term.’ Mayor Hanna said.

Artist Mike Shankster, who grew up in Jindabyne, expressed his enthusiasm for contributing to his hometown. ‘I'm always grateful for opportunities in the Snowy Mountains. It's a unique and beautiful part of Australia,’ Shankster said.

Shankster hopes the mural will help foster community engagement and a sense of place. ‘Murals are a fantastic way to uplift the aesthetic of a public space and boost community engagement. This project is about creating art that everyone can enjoy.’

The $1.5 million Jindabyne Skate Park upgrade was jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments under the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, with Council managing the execution of the project.

Council encourages residents and visitors to explore the upgraded skate park and enjoy the new artwork when it’s completed later this month.
