Liquid Trade Waste

Liquid trade waste is any discharge to a sewerage system other than domestic waste from a hand wash basin, shower, bath or toilet.

Sewerage systems are designed to safely collect, transfer and treat wastewater that is mostly of domestic origin. However, sewerage systems may also accept liquid trade waste discharges provided they are planned and controlled within acceptable limits.

Liquid trade waste includes liquids from: 

  • Industrial premises
  • Business/commercial premises (e.g. beautician, florist, hairdresser, hotel, motel, restaurant, butcher, service  station, supermarket, dentist)
  • Community/public premises (including school, college, university, hospital, nursing home, craft club)
  • Trade activities (e.g. mobile carpet cleaner, graffiti removalists, mechanical workshops, car wash, wash bay) 
  • Any commercial activities carried out at a residential premises
  • Waste from saleyards, racecourses, stables and kennels not associated with domestic households

Guidelines have been established by the NSW Government regarding liquid trade waste. Under the Liquid Trade Waste Regulation Guidelines. Snowy Monaro Regional  Council and businesses within the region have a number of responsibilities in relation to liquid trade waste. A discharger who fails to obtain Council’s approval or fails to comply with the conditions of approval may be prosecuted under the Local Government Act 1993 and the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997.
