Cemetery Maintenance

Native vegetation sign in cemetery

The cemeteries managed by Snowy Monaro Regional Council are generally of a historic nature and most are in a rural setting surrounded by farm land or reserves. For this reason the cemeteries are maintained to have a rural feel, with many including areas set aside within the cemeteries for native vegetation to grow.

Animal Damage

Wombats:

Council often has reports of damage from Wombats within the cemeteries.

As wombats are a protected native species it is often difficult to stop their destruction. Once notified Council will undertake measures to prevent the wombat entry via that path by closing the entry.

Permanent capture and removal can only be undertaken with a special license from NPWS.

Rabbits:

Cemetery Services in conjunction with Biosecurity Services undertake regular rabbit remediation works to remove burrows and holes and reduce the numbers which enter the cemetery land.
