COVID-19 has seen a nationwide shortage of qualified lifeguards affecting the public pool industry and our region’s pools have been hard hit by staffing limitations.

To help address the shortage on a long-term basis and to keep our local pools open, Snowy Monaro Regional Council is excited to announce a FREE ‘Pool Lifeguard’ Course coming this March to be held at Cooma Pool.

Thanks to a partnership between Council, Royal Life Saving NSW and Training Services NSW, the course will be held over two sessions across Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 March 2022 at Cooma Pool.

This has been Council’s most difficult year on record recruiting staff to keep our pools open for the community, with the limited team for the current season working extremely hard across long hours and multiple facilities to keep everything open, running and safe.

The course is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to try something new or sample a different career without making a major commitment, or those looking for casual or part-time work.

Attendees will achieve the following competencies once they have completed the course:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid (prerequisite)
  • PUAEME001 Provide emergency care
  • PUAEME003 Administer oxygen in an emergency situation
  • PUAOPE010 Operate an automated external defibrillator in an emergency
  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU006 Supervise clients in aquatic locations
  • SISCAQU007 Perform advanced water rescues

Upon successful completion of the course, attendees will be qualified to work at any of Snowy Monaro public pool and able to assist Council in keeping our facilities open.

If you’re interested in completing this course please contact Council by email at council@snowymonaro.nsw.gov.au before Friday 25 February 2022.
