Snowy River Hostel update
Published on 30 October 2025
Council has resolved to give the community and interested residents the opportunity to form a community-led working group (with partners) to develop a proposal for repurposing the Snowy River Hostel site. This follows a vote held in the confidential section of the second session of Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s October Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 29 October 2025.
The decision brings to an end the formal expression of interest process that commenced in early 2024.
Council will support the community-led working group’s operations by providing a meeting space.
More information about the working group process will be made available shortly and allow for a community-led proposal for repurpose.
Background on Council’s residential aged care divestment process
Snowy River Hostel closed in March 2024, following the conclusion of Council’s divestment from residential aged care.
A residential aged care operator could not be found for Snowy River Hostel as had been initially planned under the divestment process.
As a result, Council undertook an expression of interest (EOI) process in 2024 to seek a not-for-profit operator who could utilise Snowy River Hostel as a respite care or similar type of facility for the benefit of the Berridale community.
Submissions under the EOI process closed in March 2024. Assessment and negotiation processes began following the closing date, and have been ongoing in the time leading up to Council’s October 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting where a final decision has now been made.
